FEBRUARY:
Pollstar Live! 2012 was great. The live expo - was fun. Elaine was in L. A. Wednesday, the 1st of February, early on the 1st Day. She started her day at the Event Live Expo after checking in. Talked to the Celebrity Coaches' representative. They had an actual VIP 6 bunk, w/double bed in back of coach (over the top). She wished there was the new 2012 prevost 12 bunk to view, but was invited to see one (Steele Music is comparing cost of several companies). Elaine was there until Saturday enjoying the Live Expo, Pollstar conference and awards night.
From Elaine:
Day 1) 10 am Checked in- My room is over looking the pool on the 18th floor at the JW Marriott LA Live. Visited the Event Live Expo -after having something to eat at LA Market (very good). Before Dinner I attended the Opening Reception at the Hotel pool deck 5:30pm - 7pm (was a little windy) and met up with people from last year (had apps at the Reception) and dinner at WP 24 -was wonderful. The view itself was worth it. Great service and met some great people before the evening started, had a great time.
Day 2) 6 am woke up - went for a walk and then had breakfast at LA Market. Went back up to dress for Day 1 of the Pollstar conference. Coffee service was starting when I arrived at the conference level. Had a chance to have another cup of coffee and sit down to chat with a woman that has been in the business forever, Barbara Hubbard of ACTS, it was nice seeing her again. Then we all went to the sessions that we wanted to go to. My choice was a Mentoring Session with Bill Silva, Bill Silva Management. We all had a great time at the round table and I wished that Pollstar would have more. Bill was straight forward and easy to talk to. I enjoyed my time and wished I had more time to talk to him. In the same room they had Ron Kaplan of Monterey International -Booking agency and after Bill was finished, I went over to introduce myself to Ron, very personable and one of the best agents.
We had a break- some goodies came out and water.
Went to our Keynote. Before the start, had a chance to talk to Billy Beane, GM of Oakland A's (very nice guy). The Keynote was with the wonderful Bob Lefsetz ..... and a conversation with Moneyball's Author Michael Lewis and General Manager Billy Beane of the Oakland A's. It was an interesting choice this year.
Lunch Time - Today we were on our own - Trader Vic's and a meeting.
Came back at the start of 3:30 - 4:45pm session - Producing Successful Festival. Skip Paige of Goldenvoice (moderator) with Michael Eavis, Glastonbury Festivals; Serge Grimaux, Intellitix; Gary Richards, Hard Events; Pasquale Rotella, Insomniac; Shaul Zislin, Hangout Music Festival. Learned a lot ! Actually met Michael Eavis and Thanked him for coming from Glastonbury to speak with us (some people were a little hard on him).
Dinner at Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill on the Campus of LA LIVE just outside the Hotel looking up at Nokia and Staple Center with some great SMG friends. Thanks for a great Dinner.
Day 3) 6 am woke up, took a walk and had breakfast. Arrived when coffee service started at the conference level -had coffee and chat with friends.
9:30 am - 10:45 am Full Service Performing Arts Centers (PACS) Brian Swanson, Monterey International (Moderator); Mike Carr, Broward Center for the Performing Arts; Christi Dortch, Tennessee Performing Arts Center; Rick Farrell, ICM; Gerald Henley, Fox Cities Performing Arts Center; Kelly Milukas, Professional Facilities Management; Bob Papke, SMG. Their main point was PACS are not just Performing Arts Centers, but Venues. You can get up and get a drink, bring it back to your seat and dance tooo. : -)))) from Kelly. The night before a few of us were having drinks at The Mixing Room and we had a chance to meet and talk with Gerald Henley before today. His venue has some great choices for starting bands.
11:00am -12:15 pm Profits? Someone's Got To Be Making Money. This session was with Dan Steinberg, Square Peg Concerts. Bill Silva said, " I can recommend his services" (Dan sat in at Bill Silva's round table). Dan sessions are very fun! This year he had Cathy Felling, Staff Pro; Harlan Frey, Roadrunner Records; Jerry Goldman, SMG BOK Center; Paul Lohr, New Frontier Touring; Anthony Nicoladis, Live Nation; Jonathan Shank, Red Light Management; Andy Somers, The Agency Group; Jason Zink, Sherpa Concerts. The session started well, then Dan brought out Tequila for the panel. It was a lot of fun. Music was great!
Had a chance to talk to Harlan Frey of Roadrunner Records after the session and I want to Thank him for taking the time to chat with me.
Lunch Time: Buffet Lunch Sponsored by DG Medios and Allphones arena. Did a great Job!! Food was good this year.
2:00pm - 3:15pm From Gazzarri's To Staple Center - A Conversation with Randy Phillips, AEG Live; Hosted by Elliott Lefko, Goldenvoice. It got a little tear eyed when he started to talk about Michael Jackson and when he went to the emergency room to see him at his last hour.
Elliott did a great job moving the conversation along.
3:30 pm - 4:45 pm Rod Essig's Country Music 2012. Rod is a booking agent at CAA out of Nashville, TN. I am still thinking about managing Country Artists. It was great talking to Rod and learning that the Nashville scene has learned to accept some changes. Still have not made up my mind-Steele Music is now only accepting demos from Rock, Hard Rock, and Alternative Rock with Metal and some Metal only bands- Just as the conversation was starting Charlie Brusco came in and everyone said, "Hi Charlie". Charlie Brusco is the reason why I wanted to be a manager. It was a honor to talk to him after the session. Thank you Charlie !
Charlie has moved to Red Light Management with Styx.
Then, went up stairs and dressed up for the 23rd Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards - Hosted by Chris Hardwick at Club Nokia. 6:30pm - 11pm Dinner was served after the awards at Club Nokia.
Afterwards, I went to WP 24 for some Coffee and Chocolate in the Lounge area!
Day 4) Had breakfast with my cousin at LA Market, went walking around a little bit and went to the Airport and home.
See everyone next year.
